Richard Abington

Richard (Dick) Abington went home to his Lord and Savior June 28, 2014. Richard was born to Don and Agnes (Walker) Abington on October 1, 1931 in Kansas City, MO. He had eight siblings, Don, Walker, John (Stanley), Gloria, Jewell, Roger, Leland (Carter), and Mary Lou. Richard had a loving and fun childhood, for the times. In 1951, Richard married Edith J. Sawyer. Together they had three children, Richard W., Jr., Susan J. and Walter L. After being widowed in 2001, Richard was married to Connie Grate in 2002. Richard served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on September 14, 1953. He then attended William Jewel College in Kansas City and became a member of the clergy while working as a barber to support the family. In 1976, Richard moved to Wyoming to work in the gas field industry, including bringing the Anshutz Plant online and working at Bairoil CO2 plant until his retirement in the early 1990s. After retirement, he traveled with Edith and then Connie, enjoying scenery and kicking rocks. Survivors include son, Walter (Brenda) of North Platte, NE; daughter, Susan Alexie (Joe) of Togiak, Alaska; step-son, Raymond Grate (Deborah) of Rawlins; step-daughters, Barbara Hawke of Warsaw, MO, and DeAnna Deffenbaugh (Terry) of Rawlins; brother, Roger (Pat) of Jackson, TN; eleven grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Edith, in 2001, son Richard Jr., in 2009, second wife, Connie, in 2010, siblings Don, Walker, John, Gloria, Jewell, Leland, and Mary Lou, and great-granddaughter Danielle Hays, in 2010. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Rawlins. Visitation will take place one hour prior to service at the church. Pastor Gene Washburne will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in the Rawlins Cemetery. Lunch will be provided following the committal at the church for family and friends. Contributions may be made in Richard's memory to the First Southern Baptist Church of Rawlins.
