Mary "Lucy" (Espinoza) Medina, 89 years old, of Rawlins, Wyoming, died Saturday evening, August 18, 2018, in Casper, Wyoming, surrounded by her family and a priest. A vigil service with recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at St. Joseph's church, with Father Sam Hayes as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Rawlins Cemetery. Lucy spent her life raising her family and opened her home to many people that needed a loving mother figure or a square meal. Her beautiful smile could brighten the gloomiest day. She was a mother figure to many Rawlins' youth at one time. When she traveled with us, she would find a bench and say, "I will just sit here while you are exploring and visit with the friends I've yet to meet." And meet friends she would. Her main priority was making a home for her children, but she enjoyed waitressing occasionally. In the 1970's she became involved with the Community Action Agency, where she was a common-sense thinker and creative problem solver on civil rights issues. During this time she was also involved in the Committee for Preservation of La Cultura. She embraced the women's liberation civil rights movement, and became the director of Carbon County Family Planning, where she worked with people who call her family to this day. Finally, she finished out her working career working beside her husband at Adolph's Auto Service. She enjoyed the countryside and camping, crocheting and embroidery in addition to making stacks of tortillas, and when we were lucky, sopapillas. She and Dad loved dancing and hosting famous parties for family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and creating a special bond with them. Lucy was born on September 20, 1928, in Baldy, New Mexico, to Fermin Espinoza and Natividad (Cordova) Espinoza. On October 6, 1945, she married the love of her life, Adolph C Medina Jr. Together they had eight children. Survivors include six of her children Carmen Mills (Charles), of Casper, Wyoming; James Medina (Vicki) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Daniel Medina (Tatyana) of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Beverly Hite (Tom) of Hanna, Wyoming; Dora Flagg (William) of Greeley, Colorado; and Patricia Bonnette (Michael) of Rawlins, Wyoming.; Sister Cora Archuleta of Rawlins; brother Tele Campos of Rawlins; Samuel Campos (Juanita) of Rawlins, and Phil Campos of Laramie, Wyoming, as well as 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph; sons Tim and Paul Medina, her father Fermin Espinoza; mother Natividad Campos; grandson Martin Coburn and various other relatives.
