Longtime Rawlins resident Leonard Schmidt passed away at his home on March 3rd. He was born on September 8, 1931 in Spaulding, Nebraska. He joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduating from the St. Paul High School in Nebraska. He was honorably discharged and then continued on to the University of Nebraska where he earned a degree in accounting. While at the UN, he met and married Margery Polzkill, also a student. Upon graduation, he moved to Rawlins, Wyoming where he was employed by an accounting firm. He is survived by Margery, his wife of 54 years as well as his four children: David Schmidt, Denver, Colorado; Kathy Schmidt-Miller (Ray), Gillette, WY; Douglas Schmidt, Sinclair, Wyoming; Judy Galuska (Mike), Kirkland, Washington. He leaves 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and a sister Roberta Spilinek; McCook, NE. This Nebraska transplant loved WY. He was a life time member of the Elks and Kiwanis Club. He was an avid golfer and hunter. He received an award of appreciation for his 40 years of service to the 4H livestock sales program. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. A memorial service in his honor will be held Thursday, March 8 at 10 am at Rostad Mortuary in Rawlins, Wyoming. A reception following the service will be held at Square Shooters Eating House located inside the Best Western Cotton Tree Inn. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Bentsen, Ed Woodward, Bill Woodward, and Mike Smith.
