A celebration of life memorial service for Leon Roy Hetherington is scheduled at 10:00 a.m. for Mon., Oct. 10, 2016, in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Saratoga with the Rev. Susan Dyer officiating. Internment will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the family plot at the Green Hills Cemetery in Laramie. Mr. Hetherington died Aug. 31 in the Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Rawlins following several years of illness. Born July 24, 1933, to Arthur and Viola Hetherington in Laramie, Leon moved to Saratoga with his family in 1936 and spent his early years there attending school through sixth grade before returning to Laramie. Following graduation from Laramie High School in 1951 he enlisted in the Marine Corp in April of 1953 and served four years. A graduate of the University of Wyoming law school, Leon practiced law in Wyoming, Colorado and Florida, ranched, held a real estate license, staked uranium claims in Shirley Basin and taught law at Denver University. After serving as Frisco, Colo., town attorney and county deputy district attorney he was appointed Summit County Judge, a position he held until 1980 when he moved to Saratoga. He loved his "dobies" and helped establish a dog park in Saratoga 12 years ago and built it up to the outstanding area it is today. His friends noted that he was extremely proud of the dog park which is quite his legacy. Leon was an accomplished sailor and scuba diver and maintained a sail boat on the Saratoga Lake in summer and spent several winters in Florida enjoying the ocean. He was married to Ruth Schofield in Broomfield, Colo., on June 5, 1970. Survivors include his widow, Ruth, of Saratoga, stepson Steve Callahan of Broomfield, Colo., and two granddaughters, Rhonda Margulies of Denver, Colo., and Christina Hetherington of Laramie. His parents, a sister Joy Toomey of California and a stepson, Mike Callahan, preceded him in death. A fund in his memory has been established with the Rocky Mountain Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Donations may be contributed online.
