Joan Mahoney Page, Granny "Jo", 83, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2015 in Rawlins. A true native of Rawlins, she was born in Casper on August 17, 1931 to Frank "J.F." and Anne M. Mahoney. A lifelong resident of Rawlins, she grew up and spent summers on her father's ranch north of Rawlins. She would ride her horse to Lamont for a soda in the summertime and, inheriting her father's sweet-tooth, chased her soda down with a chocolate. She attended Rawlins schools: elementary at West Ward, fifth and sixth grade at Central School, seventh and eighth in the basement of the high school (now the Carbon Building) and graduated from Rawlins High School with the class of 1949 after the infamous winter of 1949. No global warming that year! After high school and a hard winter, she convinced her parents that California was the place to be and headed to San Rafael, where she attended Dominican College, graduating in 1953 with a BA in Education. She taught elementary classes in California for several years, even bringing bum lambs to class so her students could learn to feed, nurture and of course, play with the lambs. In 1955, while in California (we think it was a setup), she met an easterner with a funny accent named Leonard A. Page. They were married in Rawlins on June 30, 1956. They returned to California for a brief period, but returned to Rawlins in 1957, where she has lived and raised her family ever since. Joan was a longtime member of St. Joseph's, P.E.O., and for the last thirty-plus years, AA; a feat we are all proud of her for. She was a past board member for both the Carbon County Library and Carbon County Museum. She was an outstanding mother, grandmother, wife and confidant to many friends. She practiced tough love more than we sometimes wanted, but under a sometimes gruff exterior, there was a heart of gold who would help anyone who asked. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leonard; children, Leonard (Sue) of Denver, Frank (Angie) of Cody, Anne (Darroll) of Laramie and Helen of Denver; grandchildren, Michael, Logan, Nicholas and Kole of Denver and Katelyn and Kevin of Cody. She was preceded in death by her parents. Per her request, cremation has taken place. A Vigil Service with recitation of the Rosary will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rawlins. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rawlins with her friend, Father Sam Hayes as the Celebrant. Interment with committal services will follow in the Rawlins Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church P.O. Box 68, Rawlins, WY 82301.
