Helen Louise Jones went home to Jesus on February 5, 2024, at Rawlins Rehabilitation. She was surrounded by her family and passed peacefully 1.5 hours prior to her 99th birthday.
She was born February 6, 1925, in Drumright, Oklahoma, to Mary Thompson and Harry W. Moore. (Her mother always said Dr. Starr got the wrong date and she was born on February 9.) She attended schools in Drumright through high school and graduated from Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). She married Vic Jones on December 21, 1947, after he returned from WWII. They lived in St. Louis, Oklahoma until 1955, when they moved to Bairoil, Wyoming.
She began her teaching career in Jeffrey City in the Quonset Hut school built there when the uranium mine was starting. She then continued teaching in Bairoil for many years. In 1965 she returned to summer school and received her degree in Library Science. This allowed her to be the librarian at the elementary schools for several years. She was a lover of books, education and children and spent countless hours helping her grandchildren and great-grandchildren “get their lessons.”
She was a long-time member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Rawlins. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved her dogs, especially Hunny and Bubbles, who pre-deceased her. The Post Office will miss her because she mailed 20-30 cards or more each month to new friends, old friends, and children for birthdays and anniversaries. She did not personally know all of these people but considered them part of her life.
Helen is survived by her children, Vickie (Bob) Taylor of Rawlins/Arizona, Tom(Julie) Jones of Willis, Texas, Randy Jones of Rawlins, and daughter-in-law Marta Jones of Laramie; Grandchildren Gregg (Shanda) Rothenberger, Gretchen (Tyler) Untch, Grant (Jenn) Rothenberger, Gwynn (Brad) Bartlett, Tonjia (Lou) Lascano, all of Rawlins, and Aaron (Diane) Jones of Rogers, Minnesota, Hayley (Steve) Barnes and Cameron Jones of Ft. Collins Colorado, and Katie Jones of The Woodlands, Texas; great-grandchildren Marissa Molina and Zaysha Lascano, Connor & Jaxson Rothenberger, Carston and Aspyn Bartlett all of Rawlins; Eva and Reese Jones of Rogers, Minnesota; Ema Jones of Laramie, Wy; Gavin Barnes of San Diego; and great-great grandchildren Alayna and Daetyn Molina of Rawlins and Hyde Seijo of Rogers, Minnesota. She also is survived by nephew Jim Banks and family of Washington, DC, niece Martha Pearce-Smith of Canada, nephews Ron of Texas, Kenneth, and Clay (Tresea)Kellogg of Oklahoma, Charles (Julie) Moore of Florida, Michael (Laurissa) Moore of California, and several great-nieces and nephews.
She leaves behind so many friends, from her time teaching and from her church, to her time in the nursing home. She was grateful for each and every one. Thank you to the staff at Rawlins Rehab for her care the past 19 months.
She was preceded by her parents, her husband Vic Jones and son Rick Jones, her sisters Mary Betty Banks and Barbara Kellogg, and nephew Mike (Gloria) Banks. her stepfather Arnold Scheer, and half-brother Harry C Moore.
Please do not send flowers. Donations may be made to Rawlins Rehabilitation Activities Department or Boys and Girls Club of Rawlins. Cards may be sent to the family address, 260 La Paloma Drive, Rawlins, WY 82301.
