Eugene D. Quintana

December 26, 1951 — May 26, 2023

Rawlins, Wyoming

Eugene “Gene” Quintana, resident of Rawlins, Wyoming passed away on May 26th, 2023, at Memorial Hospital of Carbon County at the age of 71.

He was born on December 26th, 1951, to Norberto and Ferminia Quintana in Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Espanola, New Mexico where he graduated High School. After graduation, he studied to become a patrolman in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He then went on to work as a patrolman in Espanola, NM. While working, he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Varela on October 26th, 1974. In 1976, they moved to Rawlins, Wyoming where he worked at the Wyoming State Penitentiary for 30 years. Together they raised 3 children, Jessica, Bernadette, and Gene “Bino” Quintana.

In his younger years, Gene enjoyed the outdoors. Spending time hunting, fishing, and camping. His friends can tell many stories that were spent at Jack Creek around a campfire. Gene retired in 2007 where he would become a full-time “babysitter” for his great grandchildren. He loved going to the casinos, going on yearly vacations with his wife, sister, and brother-in-law, and occasionally playing cards and board games with his family. His family and friends that would visit always knew they would find Gene sitting in his favorite seat, smoking a cigarette, and watching either Sci-fi, Westerns, National Geographic, or John Wick. However, above all things, he loved having his family and friends over to visit. He looked forward to Sunday breakfast where all his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids would come and spend time together.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Elizabeth. Children, Jessica Martinez, Berna (Max) Gomez, and Gene “Bino” (Kristin) Quintana. Grandchildren: Alex (Anthony) Folsom, Deseree (Nate) Frescas, Christopher Martinez, Aleesha (Billey) Kleiner, Sean Maes, Cain (Melissa) Gomez, Demetrius Gomez, Leo Gomez, Eli Asher, Treyton Quintana, and Alyna Quintana. Great-grandchildren: Tearah Moore, Trinitee, Tayson, Tristin and Talon Frescas, and AJ & Aaron Martinez. Before he passed, he was surprised to learn he was going to have 2 more great-grandkids.

His siblings, Geri Varela, Laura Quintana, Sandra, Randy, Inez Lujan, Cathy Balkey, Florence (Marvin) Velarde, and special uncle Simon “Sammy” Martinez. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and lots of extended family including his brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ferminia and Norberto. His grandparents Simon and Florencia. Brothers Leroy Quintana, Melvin Lujan, and Anselmo “Chemo” Varela.
